Sasikala Natarajan (born 1956) is best known for being a close confidante of Jayalalithaa, the late Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu .Sasikala is a member of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the Dravidian party that Jayalalithaa headed from 1989 until her death in 2016. According to media reports Sasikala is tipped to succeed Jayalalithaa as AIADMK general secretary.
During Jayalalithaa’s three tenures as Chief Minister, Sasikala is alleged to have wielded absolute power behind the scenes. She was arrested along with Jayalalithaa as on 7 December 1996 and was remanded to judicial custody for 30 days in connection with the Colour TV scam.
Sasikala was born to Vivekanandan and Krishnaveni, in a Thevar Community family from Thiruthuraipoondi. The family moved to Mannargudi. Sasikala married M. Natarajan, a public relations officer in the Tamil Nadu government. Her husband M. Natarajan was working as a Public Relations officer in Tamil Nadu government on temporary basis. He was working closely with the then District Collector of Cuddalore V S Chandralekha, IAS, who in turn was very close to the then Tamil Nadu CM Ramachandran.
